Root Canal Treatment

Many people have anxiety when it comes to needing root canal treatment. At Aglow Dental Group, however, there is no reason to fear root canal therapy or any other procedure.

Dr Angela Zhang and our entire team are dedicated to patient comfort and making sure that even the most complex procedures are comfortable. Each patient has different needs, and if you feel nervous about your procedure, let us know so that we can put you at ease.

When Root Canals become Necessary

Root canal treatment saves teeth when infection in the canal puts them at risk. Infection develops because of deep decay, trauma or periodontal disease. Chronic teeth grinding also causes force trauma that may lead to developing an infection.

Common signs of root canal infection include:

  • Tooth pain and inflammation
  • Toothache or sensitivity
  • Swelling of the face, neck or jaw
  • Discolouration of the tooth
  • Small drainage lesion on the gums
  • Discomfort when drinking hot liquids

We may detect the signs of infection on routine x-rays that show the apex of the root. In many cases, symptoms may begin as subtle signs of pressure or discomfort and can worsen with time.

How Root Canal Treatment Saves the Tooth

After completely anaesthetising the tooth, Dr Zhang will access the tooth’s root and clean out the pulp, which consists of nerve fibres and tissue, using precision rotary instruments. Rotary instruments have tiny, flexible tips that make treatment more efficient and eliminate many of the risks involved.

Dr Zhang will place medication inside the canal and fill the canals before sealing the tooth with a temporary restoration.

Inflammation takes a few days to resolve as your immune system heals the tooth and surrounding area, so it is normal to feel some residual sensitivity and discomfort for a few days following root canal treatment. In most cases, anti-inflammatory medications will provide enough relief until symptoms subside.

Protecting Root-Canal Treated Teeth

After root canal therapy, we recommend a follow-up visit in a week or two to determine if the tooth has healed completely.

Because the tooth no longer has a nerve or blood supply, it can become brittle and subject to fracture. Dr Zhang will reinforce and protect the tooth using a tooth-coloured dental crown.

A dental crown covers the entire tooth structure and absorbs force from chewing. We create natural looking, tooth-coloured crowns that blend in perfectly with your smile.
